Shopping for wine with Cambodia’s expert sommelier

Eden Gnean won Cambodia’s first sommelier competition back in 2007 and has since made a name for herself as one of the country’s foremost wine experts. Now the sommelier at Rosewood hotel in Phnom Penh, she accompanied Discover to the Warehouse wine merchants in the capital and picked out four of her favourite bottles

Gérard Bertrand Gris Blanc Rosé

Eden says:
“Much of the pleasure of this wine comes from the aroma – the flavour and colour, you get that on the nose. It’s the perfect wine for a celebration on a warm summer’s day. Have a party with some friends and enjoy this wine with all kinds of food, although it works particularly well with lighter foods such as salad.”

M. Chapoutier Les Varonniers

Eden says:
“This is special, as it’s mainly made from the sour syrah grape, picked by hand in the Crozes-Hermitage area in the northern Rhône Valley of France. The wine is created with the environment in mind, meaning the farmers pay more respect to the land and adopt organic farming techniques. This comes through in its complex flavour that pairs perfectly with lamb or pepper sauce.”

Billecart-Salmon Champagne

Eden says:
“This is a very special bottle of champagne. It’s made using the traditional champenoise method of fermenting the drink inside the bottle, which makes the champagne more complex and differentiates it from other sparkling wines. It works with oysters, ceviche and seafood in general – anything you would squeeze a little lemon on, basically.”

Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc

Eden says:
“It’s a light colour in appearance but on the nose you can feel all the acidity, and on the palate there is passion fruit and citrus. Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand is well known across the world for its acidity, structure and light elegance. It pairs particularly well with salad, grilled fish or chicken. It also works as an aperitif or is a good wine to be enjoyed on its own.”
